The site of the 9th lock gate
The lockhouse
This 18th century lockhouse hosts a permanent exhition on the history of locks which was instrumental in the industrial development of the area.
The old lock gate
This reconditioned lock gate is testimony to the original canal way before it was changed to the Freycinet standard in the late 1800’s.
The barge
Go down the Armançon lower hold and visit an exhibition devoted to the life of barge operators and their boats. The living quarters are in their original condition.
As you exit the Museum
go aboard the ‘Les 7 écluses’ barge with the Canal du Centre Association from Easter Day to All Saints Day for a guided visit to the water divide reach.
Canal du Centre Association
First called ‘maison du canal’, the Association was set up in 1990 to encourage the development of the Ecomuseum’ s extension in Écuisses. Volunteers and Canal du Centre lovers have followed Ms Ballery, a former barge operator lockmaster at the first Mediterranean lock in Écuisses. In 1991, the Association had the city fit the main Ecomuseum exhibition in the Armançon barge. Association volunteers helped with the installation and they keep welcoming visitors to the site. In 1994, the Association buys a 60-passenger boat for visits of the lock. First operated by volunteers like Ms Ballery who delivered real life comments, two employees now take care of the boat while two others carry out secretarial and guide work. Food is also available on the boat but seating is then limited to 50.
