The Ecomuseum promotes the local heritage of Le Creusot-Montceau area.

Mining and steel making activities have played a key role in regional development. In addition to this, agriculture and cattle-breeding are quite important in a zone situated between the urban and industrial areas, on both sides of the waterway connecting the Saône to the Loire rivers. This is why the Ecomuseum has also organised exhibitions and research to promote rural and heritage craft art. The museum collections include artefacts and documents paying special tribute to the rural world, its evolution, its mechanisation as well as to its relationship with cities/factories.

from archeology to industrial heritage

Following the 1976 Ecomuseum symposium in Le Creusot, ‘industrial heritage’ replaced ‘industrial archeology’.

Research activities, exhibitions, publications, magazines and conferences allowed the Ecomuseum to become one of the first institutions for heritage study and conservation.
